Many salons use non-ammoniated hair colour, unfortunately whilst the lack of odor is preferable to users, scalp irritation is commonplace and far worse than ammonia based colourants.
Interestingly in 1987, Daniel Field worked as a hair colour consultant for an Italian hair company, ammonia had been used as the alkaline in all hair colourants at this point.
His challenge was to come up with a non-odorous replacement for ammonia.
This alternative was called monoethernolamine (mea), and the first non ammonia hair colour range was introduced into the UK by Daniel Field in 1988.
